چکیده
We present an integrated activity-based discrete choice model system of an individualÕs activity and travel schedule, for forecasting urban passenger travel demand. A prototype demonstrates the system concept using a 1991 Boston travel survey and transportation system level of service data. The model system represents a personÕs choice of activities and associated travel as an activity pattern overarching a set of tours. A tour is de®ned as the travel from home to one or more activity locations and back home again. The activity pattern consists of important decisions that provide overall structure for the dayÕs activities and travel. In the prototype the activity pattern includes (a) the primary ± most important ± activity of the day, with one alternative being to remain at home for all the dayÕs activities; (b) the type of tour for the primary activity, including the number, purpose and sequence of activity stops; and (c) the number and purpose of secondary ± additional ± tours. Tour models include the choice of time of day, destination and mode of travel, and are conditioned by the choice of activity pattern. The choice of activity pattern is in ̄uenced by the expected maximum utility derived from the available tour alternatives. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this article we estimate external costs for four representative types of freight trains. For each type of freight train, we estimate three general types of external costs and compare them with the private costs experienced by railroad companies. The general types of external costs include: accidents (fatalities, injuries, and property damage); emissions (air pollution and greenhouse gases); ...

We address the problem of forecasting spatial activities on a daily basis that are subject to the types of multiple, complex calendar eects that arise in many applications. Our problem is motivated by applications where we generally need to produce thousands, and frequently tens of thousands, of models, as arises in the prediction of daily origin±destination freight ̄ows. Exponential smoothing...

Urban planners typically set the minimum parking requirements for every land use to satisfy the peak demand for free parking. As a result, parking is free for 99% of automobile trips in the United States. Minimum parking requirements increase the supply and reduce the price ± but not the cost ± of parking. They bundle the cost of parking spaces into the cost of development, and thereby increase...

The theory of induced travel demand asserts that increases in highway capacity will induce additional growth in trac. This can occur through a variety of behavioral mechanisms including mode shifts, route shifts, redistribution of trips, generation of new trips, and long run land use changes that create new trips and longer trips. The objective of this paper is to statistically test whether th...

The paper evaluates technical and logistics developments that could lead to increased economic and technical efficiency of rail–road transport terminals. The main design parameters are identified (length and utilisation of transhipment tracks, train and truck arrival behaviour/patterns, type and number of handling equipment, mean stacking height in the storage area, terminal access system and p...
